China has established strong economic relations with the Ivory Coast
since 1983. Its approach is guided by the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)
through trade rather than the Western counterpart (aid). The BRI provides
massive opportunities to African nations, incredibly, Ivory Coast, through
sustainable economic investment, non-interference into other nations' internal
affairs, and focused big-ticket development projects. However, there is some
resentment due to the lack of transparency and accountability issues. The
projects that benefit the locals are hard to see and have helped raise
suspicions and triggered local resentment. There are increasing instances of
African countries canceling or delaying the BRI schemes over the increasing
debt issues. Therefore, the paper discusses the BRI nature in the African
context and highlights the Ivory Coast economy's role.
